Residual soils are found in many parts of the world. Like other soils, they are used extensively in construction, being built upon and used as construction materials. Residual soils are formed when the processes of rock weathering proceed at a faster rate than the transport processes by water, gravity and wind, whereby much of the resulting soils will remain in place. The soil typically retains many of the characteristics of the parent rock. In a tropical region, residual soil layers can be very thick, sometimes extending for hundred of meters before reaching unweathered rock.

The book is arranged so that it is possible for individual designers to use the manual in different ways, depending upon their experience and the particular aspects of foundation design under consideration.
The book, which is divided into three parts, deals with the whole of foundation design from a practical engineering viewpoint. Chapters 1–3, i.e. Part 1, deal with soil mechanics and the behaviour of soils, and the commission and interpretation of site investigations are covered in detail.
In Part 2 (Chapters 4–, the authors continue to share their experience – going back over 45 years – of dealing with filled and contaminated sites and sites in mining areas; these ‘problem’ sites are increasingly becoming ‘normal’ sites for today’s engineers.
In Part 3 (Chapters 9–15), discussion and practical selection of foundation types are covered extensively, followed by detailed design guidance and examples for the various foundation types. The design approach ties together the safe working load design of soils with the limit-state design of structural foundation members. The emphasis on practical design is a constant theme running through this book, together with the application of engineering judgement and experience to achieve appropriate and economic foundation solutions for difficult sites. This is especially true of raft design, where a range of raft types, often used in conjunction with filled sites, provides an economic alternative to piled foundations. It is intended that the experienced engineer would find Part 1 useful to recapitulate the basics of design, and refresh his/her memory on the soils, geology and site investigation aspects. The younger engineer should find Part 1 of more use in gaining an overall appreciation of the starting point of the design process and the interrelationship of design, soils, geology, testing and ground investigation.
Part 2 covers further and special considerations which may affect a site. Experienced and young engineers should find useful information within this section when dealing with sites affected by contamination, mining, fills or when considering the treatment of sub-soils to improve bearing or settlement performance. The chapters in Part 2 give information which will help when planning site investigations and assist in the foundation selection and design process.
Part 3 covers the different foundation types, the selection of an appropriate foundation solution and the factors affecting the choice between one foundation type and another. Also covered is the actual design approach, calculation method and presentation for the various foundation types. Experienced and young engineers should find this section useful for the selection and design of pads, strips, rafts and piled foundations.
The experienced designer can refer to Parts 1, 2 and 3 in any sequence. Following an initial perusal of the manual, the young engineer could also refer to the various parts out of sequence to assist with the different stages and aspects of foundation design. For those practising engineers who become familiar with the book and its information, the tables, graphs and charts grouped together in the Appendices should become a quick and easy form of reference for useful, practical and economic foundations in the majority of natural and man-made ground conditions. Occasional re-reading of the text, by the more experienced designer, may refresh his/her appreciation of the basic important aspects of economical foundation design, which can often be forgotten when judging the merits of often over-emphasized and over-reactive responses to relatively rare foundation problems. Such problems should not be allowed to dictate the ‘norm’ when, for the majority of similar cases, a much simpler and more practical solution (many of which are described within these pages) is likely still to be quite appropriate.

Finite Element Model Updating Using Computational Intelligence Techniques (Applications to Structural Dynamics) - Marwala, Tshilidzi

Finite element models (FEMs) are widely used to understand the dynamic behaviour of various systems. FEM updating allows FEMs to be tuned better to reflect measured data and may be conducted using two different statistical frameworks: the maximum likelihood approach and Bayesian approaches. Finite Element Model Updating Using Computational Intelligence Techniques applies both strategies to the field of structural mechanics, an area vital for aerospace, civil and mechanical engineering. Vibration data is used for the updating process. Following an introduction a number of computational intelligence techniques to facilitate the updating process are proposed; they include: • multi-layer perceptron neural networks for real-time FEM updating; • particle swarm and genetic-algorithm-based optimization methods to accommodate the demands of global versus local optimization models; • simulated annealing to put the methodologies into a sound statistical basis; and • response surface methods and expectation maximization algorithms to demonstrate how FEM updating can be performed in a cost-effective manner; and to help manage computational complexity. Based on these methods, the most appropriate updated FEM is selected using the Bayesian approach, a problem that traditional FEM updating has not addressed. This is found to incorporate engineering judgment into finite elements systematically through the formulations of prior distributions. Throughout the text, case studies, specifically designed to demonstrate the special principles are included. These serve to test the viability of the new approaches in FEM updating. Finite Element Model Updating Using Computational Intelligence Techniques analyses the state of the art in FEM updating critically and based on these findings, identifies new research directions, making it of interest to researchers in strucural dynamics and practising engineers using FEMs. Graduate students of mechanical, aerospace and civil engineering will also find the text instructive.

The Scaled Boundary Finite Element Method

A novel computational procedure called the scaled boundary finite-element method is described which combines the advantages of the finite-element and boundary-element methods : Of the finite-element method that no fundamental solution is required and thus expanding the scope of application, for instance to anisotropic material without an increase in complexity and that singular integrals are avoided and that symmetry of the results is automatically satisfied. Of the boundary-element method that the spatial dimension is reduced by one as only the boundary is discretized with surface finite elements, reducing the data preparation and computational efforts, that the boundary conditions at infinity are satisfied exactly and that no approximation other than that of the surface finite elements on the boundary is introduced. In addition, the scaled boundary finite-element method presents appealing features of its own : an analytical solution inside the domain is achieved, permitting for instance accurate stress intensity factors to be determined directly and no spatial discretization of certain free and fixed boundaries and interfaces between different materials is required. In addition, the scaled boundary finite-element method combines the advantages of the analytical and numerical approaches. In the directions parallel to the boundary, where the behaviour is, in general, smooth, the weighted-residual approximation of finite elements applies, leading to convergence in the finite-element sense. In the third (radial) direction, the procedure is analytical, permitting e.g. stress-intensity factors to be determined directly based on their definition or the boundary conditions at infinity to be satisfied exactly.

In a nutshell, the scaled boundary finite-element method is a semi-analytical fundamental-solution-less boundary-element method based on finite elements. The best of both worlds is achieved in two ways: with respect to the analytical and numerical methods and with respect to the finite-element and boundary-element methods within the numerical procedures.

The book serves two goals: Part I is an elementary text, without any prerequisites, a primer, but which using a simple model problem still covers all aspects of the method and Part II presents a detailed derivation of the general case of statics, elastodynamics and diffusion.

Construction of soil and aggregate layers on steep slopes or over potential voids is becoming more common in many areas of the country. This is because the construction of new waste containment and liquid impoundment facilities and the expansion or closing of old waste facilities has become environmentally necessary to assure protection of groundwater supplies. Often these facilities must be designed to maximize storage volume, creating steep slopes, or to overcome inadequate foundation conditions, including foundation voids, while incorporating the best available containment technology. Thus designers are commonly faced with assuring the integrity and stability of sophisticated containment systems constructed on steep slopes and over void-prone foundations.

To assure optimal performance, state-of-the-art waste containment systems commonly include both conventional soil materials as well as geosynthetics. Yet, system instability or damage may result when soil - geosynthetic layers are placed on a steep slope or over a void. Reinforcing these soil layers provides a cost effective means to achieve long-term stability of soil - geosynthetic lining systems.

API 510, API 570, API 653, and NB-23 Codes/Standards for the inspection, repair, alteration, and rerating of in- service pressure vessels, piping systems, and storage tanks do address the fact that equipment degrades while in service. Fitness-For-Service (FFS) assessments are quantitative engineering evaluations that are performed to demonstrate the structural integrity of an in-service component that may contain a flaw or damage. This Standard provides guidance for conducting FFS assessments using methodologies specifically prepared for pressurized equipment. The guidelines provided in this Standard can be used to make run-repair-replace decisions to help determine if pressurized equipment containing flaws that have been identified by inspection can continue to operate safely for some period of time. These FFS assessments are currently recognized and referenced by the API Codes and Standards (510, 570, & 653), and by NB-23 as suitable means for evaluating the structural integrity of pressure vessels, piping systems and storage tanks where inspection has revealed degradation and flaws in the equipment.

مقالات ششمين كنفرانس بين المللي پژوهشگاه زلزله

 (Sixth International Conference on Seismology and Earthquake Engineering)

ششمین کنفرانس بین المللی زلزله شناسی و مهندسی زلزله (SEE6 )، اردیبهشت ماه سال آتی ( 1390) به همت پژوهشگاه بین المللی زلزله شناسی و مهندسی زلزله، در تهران برگزار می شود.
دکتر " افشین کلانتری"، دبیر برگزاری این کنفرانس، ضمن اعلام مطلب فوق افزود: این کنفرانس با حضور پژوهشگران، مهندسان و مسوولان دستگاه‌های اجرایی مرتبط با موضوع کاهش خطرپذیری ناشی از زلزله برگزار خواهد شد.
دکتر کلانتری با اشاره به برگزاری این کنفرانس طی روزهای 26 تا 28 اردیبهشت ماه 1390، خاطرنشان کرد: در این کنفرانس مقالات علمی و پژوهشی با محوریت زلزله شناسی، مهندسی ژئوتکنیک، مهندسی زلزله و سازه و مدیریت خطرپذیری ناشی از زلزله ارایه خواهند شد.
وی همچنین از برگزاری کارگاه های تخصصی در محورهای مذکور و نیز نمایشگاهی تخصصی برای شرکت‌ها، بخش‌های دولتی و خصوصی، ارائه کننده گان تجهیزات یا خدمات شاغل در زمینه‌های: زلزله‌شناسی و لرزه‌شناسی، مهندسی ژئوتکنیک، مهندسی زلزله و سازه، مطالعات آسیب‌پذیری، بهسازی لرزه‌ای، تجهیزات نوین ارتقای عملکرد لرزه‌ای سازه‌ها، ابزارگذاری و سنجش رفتار سازه‌ها، مدیریت کاهش خطرپذیری لرزه‌ای، تجهیزات قابل استفاده در مطالعات و برداشت‌های زمینی و هوایی در مطالعات و برنامه‌ریزی‌های مرتبط با موضوع وسایر امکانات لازم در زمان بحران ناشی از زلزله خبر داد.
دکتر افشین کلانتری در پایان، ضمن دعوت از کلیه علاقمندان برای ارسال مقاله و شرکت در کنفرانس SEE6، خاطرنشان کرد: این کنفرانس با توجه به حضور اساتید و متخصصان از سراسر جهان و نیز متخصصان و مسولان دستگاه های اجرایی کشور، امکانات مطلوبی برای ارائه آخرین دستاوردهای علمی و حرفه ای در زمینه های یادشده و ارائه به جامعه فنی و مهندسی کشور فراهم خواهد نمود.
قابل ذکر است که ششمین کنفرانس بین المللی زلزله شناسی و مهندسی زلزله (SEE6 )، به دو زبان فارسی و انگلیسی برگزار و مقالات در دو قالب شفاهی و پوستر ارائه خواهند شد. علاقمندان به شرکت در این کنفرانس می توانند آثار و مقالات خود را تا 31 شهریور ماه 1389 (22 سپتامبر 2010)، به دبیرخانه دایمی کنفرانس به نشانی: تهران، خيابان شهید دکتر لواسانی (فرمانیه)، خیابان دیباجی شمالی، خیابان ارغوان غربی، پلاک 21 ارسال نمایند.

تعريف علم زمين شناشی مهندسی؟

اولين تعريف: تلفيق علم زمين شناسی و مهندسی

دومين تعريف: بررسی تأثير محيط زمين شناسی بر سازه های مهندسی و ارائه راه حلهای مناسب جهت کاهش يا برطرف نمودن خطرات احتمالی

هدف از اين علم

به دنبال حل آن دسته از مسائلی هستيم که در ارتباط با زمين، برای سازه های مهندسی ايجاد می شود.

اهمیت کاربرد ساختار شکست کار -wbs- در پروژه‌ها

چکیده:

در دهه‌های گذشته ودر کشورهای مختلف دنیا، پروژه‌های زیادی با مالکیت‌های گوناگون،‌حیطه زمانی متفاوت و با بکار بردن حجم‌های مختلفی از منابع مالی، اجرا شده است. اجرا و تکمیل پروژه‌ها، تلاش زیاد و قابلیت‌های فنی و تخصصی مدیران پروژه را می‌طلبیده است. کاربرد کامپیوترهای کوچک و شخصی (PC) ابعاد دیگری از استفاده ابزار موثر، در روند مدیریت پروژه بوده است. این نوشته بر این امر تاکید دارد که طراحی صحیح و کاربرد ساختار شکست کار WORK BREACKDOWN STRURE (WBS) با نظام کدینگ و استفاده از واژه‌های مشخص، مبنای موثری برای کنترل نظام های پروژه، خط‌مشی‌ها و روش‌ها برای کلیه پروژه‌ها است. ساختار شکست کار به سازماندهی، برنامه‌ریزی کلیه مراحل پروژه کمک می‌کند. مدیریت پروژه و کلیه افرادی که در اجرای عملیات و مدیریت و کنترل درگیر هستند، در مراحل مختلف اجرای کار به اطلاعات دقیق و مفید نیاز دارند. یک ساختار شکست کار خوب طراحی شده، مبنایی برای تنظیم مناسب سیستم اطلاعاتی برای کنترل پروژه در اجرای عملیات را فراهم می‌کند.

چكيده

تونلها يكي از شريانهاي حياتي هستند كه به علت صرف هزينههاي گزاف جهت احداث آنها و نيز مختل شدن ترافيك عبوري در اثر تخريب كامل و يا آسيبهاي جدي وارده بر آنها، رعايت نكات فني ژئوتكنيكي در طراحي و نيز اجراي آنها، الزامي است. براين اساس،بررسي و مطالعه مشخصات مكانيك سنگ تودههاي سنگي و آبرفت محل احداث تونلها، ازنكات مهم در طراحي و اجراي تونلها به شمار ميرود. در اين مقاله، پس از معرفي زمينشناسي و خصوصيات ژئوتكنيكي منطقه، به ذكر و معرفي آزمايشهاي صحرايي صورت گرفته در سايت تونل شماره 4 راه جايگزين سد و نيروگاه كارون 4 پرداخته ميشود. اين تونل در بخش پايين دست ساختگاه سد مذكور قرار گرفته است. سپس در ادامه به بررسي و تحليل نتايج مطالعات صحرايي صورت گرفته در استخراج پارامترهاي ژئوتكنيكي سنگها و آبرفتهاي محدوده طرح تونل مذكور با توجه به زمين شناسي مصالح موجود در منطقه احداث تونل پرداخته خواهد شد. در اين مطالعات براي اولين بار در ايران همراه با تجهيزات صحرايي مانند GPS كمپاس و چكش اشميد، از يك دستگاه لرزه نگار سبك ،  براي تعيين سرعت امواج تراكمي و برشي استفاده گرديد.

معرفی شرکت کاترپیلار ( پاورپوینت )

کمپانی کاترپیلار در تاریخ ۱۵ام آوریل سال ۱۹۲۵ از ادغام دو کمپانی تولیدی هولت (به انگلیسی:Holt Manufacturing Company) از استاکتون، کالیفرنیا و کمپانی (به انگلیسی: C. L. Best Gas Traction Company) از سن‌لاندرو، کالیفرنیا تشکیل شد. فروش سال اول این کمپانی ۱۳ میلیون دلار بود. تا سال ۱۹۲۹ میلادی فروش تا مرز ۵۲ میلیون دلار افزایش یافت و این افزایش تا سال ۱۹۳۰ میلادی کماکان ادامه یافت. کمپانی تولیدی هولت پیشتاز استفاده از زنجیرهای کاترپیلار در جریان جنگ اول جهانی بوده‌است.

بعد از ادغام دو کمپانی، کاترپیلار دچار تغییرات بسیاری از جمله بکارگیری موتورهای دیزلی شد. محصولات این کمپانی توسط نیروی دریایی آمریکا مشهور شدند. در جریان جنگ جهانی دوم، رشد کمپانی سرعت گرفت و اولین شعبهٔ آن در خارج از آمریکا در سال ۱۹۵۰ میلادی شکل‌گرفت و آن شروعی برای تبدیل این کمپانی به یک کمپانی بین‌المللی بود.

محصولات کاترپیلار شامل تراکتورهای زنجیری، بیل‌های هیدرولیکی، لودرهای بک‌هو، گریدر، دامپ تراک، لودر، تراکتورهای کشاورزی، موتورهای دیزلی و گازی و توربین‌های گازی می‌باشد. این محصولات در راه‌سازی، معدنکاری، جنگلداری، انرژی، حمل و نقل و جابجایی مواد استفاده می‌شوند.
